The great and, up to now, mostly successful experiment in governance that is American democracy is on the brink of being destroyed by an egomaniacal, unlearned conman who is attempting to run this country like a mob operation or shady real estate business.
President Trump, abetted by a cowardly, Republican led senate which puts retention of power above national interest, has made clear that he rejects the constitutional imperative of checks and balances and intends to institute an imperial presidency.
Mr. Trump's challenge to the right of Congress to investigate, in aid of its oversight and legislative responsibilities, will likely be tested in the Supreme Court. Mr. Trump, by his all out assault on Congress' constitutional powers, seems confident
that the high court, slanted by his recent appointments, will condone his actions.
We are approaching a moment in history when the very form of our government will be in the balance and will try the commitment to the rule of law of every Justice of the Supreme Court, each of whom will have to determine whether to sanction or stop this
threat to the foundation of our constitutional democracy.
